The French Society of Biomedical Engineering

Historically, the Engineering Sciences at large have been organized on the IEEE and IEE models by the SEE (Société de Electriciens et des Electroniciens). It was coherent to include as well the BME into this organization, which is today the IFMBE representative. If we can say that the SEE has served and still continue to serve the Engineering field, and has promoted BME as much as possible, it must be recognized now that the main forces in BME are not part of the SEE.

In the 70s, some French leaders, Yves Moschetto, Jean Pierre Morucci and many others
(you know most of them), launched new initiatives (the ITBM journal, the Young Researcher Forum) in order to have a place and a space where all the researchers, engineers, students... could meet. This organization was indeed informal, with a very friendly atmosphere, but consequently unable to formally represent BME at any institutional level. This situation motivated the creation of the SFGBM in 1998, which assembles now most of the people involved in BME research.

We know that new actions have to be undertaken, in Europe and at a worldwide scale, and we are certain that they can succeed if, and only if, they rely on the most active components at national levels. This is the reason of our candidature. I would like to emphasize that the SFGBM will continue to act in an open mind with the only wish to contribute to the future challenges in our field.

The Nigerian Institute for Biomedical Engineering

The Nigerian Institute for Biomedical Engineering (N.I.B.E.) is incorporated as a non-governmental trustee organisation. It is non-political and non-.profit-making established for the general advancement of biomedical science and engineering.

In biomedical engineering, the knowledge and techniques of physical and engineering science are employed in the understanding and solution of practical problems of individual and societal health/illnesses. Therefore the central focus of the institute is on achieving health and well being of man and the society. In dong this, N.I.B.E. is posited as a hybrid professional organsiaton, for it involves all modern professions which are amenable to current scientific and technological advancement.

Aims and objectives are:
1. to create an avenue for cooperation and information sharing between professionals in the fields of biological, medical, physical, engineering, environmental and management/social sciences.
2. To apply engineering and physical principles, concepts and techniques to biomedical science, health care, human and social well being.
3. To develop and promote the study and practice of biomedical science and engineering.
4. To conduct training and educational courses and disseminate professional information to enable members update their knowledge in biomedical science and engineering.
5. To design and evolve suitable methods , instruments and material aimed at pursuing the technological advancement of biological and medical science research and practice.
6. To instill in members and affiliate industries the required maintenance culture in the biomedical, health and allied industries.
7. To enhance and maintain links with national, international and multinational organs and bodies required to promote the Institute's objectives.
8. To set standards for the professional practice of biomedical engineering in Nigeria.
9. To issue regulations for safe use and applications of biomedical equipment and techniques.

The major professional activities of N.I.B.E. are carried out in ten divisions which represent the specialty interests within biomedical engineering. In its activities N.I.B.E. involves in training, development research and services. By this, it doubles as both a professional institute and a learned society. The Institute holds Annual General Meetings (A.G.M.) and conferences, seminars, symposia, workshops, lectures, courses and colloquia where current learned and professional papers are delivered and discussed as means of updating members knowledge in biomedical science and engineering. N.I.B.E. publishes its activities regularly in a newsletter. There is also an official journal, Journal of biomedical Engineering in Nigeria, containing technical papers covering the various aspects of biomedical engineering as reflected in the separate divisions.

Membership of N.I.B.E. is open to all practicing professionals and corporate bodies in Nigeria whose specialty areas fall within those indicated in the divisional groups.
